Robots for security and surveillance: night rounds, perimeter checks, alarm verification

Patrol robots run rounds on a set route, docked drones launch on an alarm and the images reach the security control room. Guards decide on the response.

IN BRIEF

Updated

  1. Industrial sites, car parks and warehouses use patrol robots, drone-in-a-box systems and quadruped robots for rounds, perimeter checks and remote alarm verification.

  2. Robotnik RB-WATCHER patrols for up to 5 h at 2.5 m/s with a visible and thermal bi-spectral camera, and returns to its charging station on its own, according to its manufacturer.

  3. Robot Distribution defines the robot and the route with the security manager, commissions it and maintains it, for purchase, rental or RaaS.

WHAT ROBOTS DO

Three tasks robots take on, round after round.

  1. Night rounds

Outside opening hours, a patrol robot covers the site and records images and position at each checkpoint. Gosuncn X3 runs 8 h or 28 km between wireless charges, according to its manufacturer.

  2. Perimeter checks

The robot follows fences and gates and reports anomalies to the control room. Knightscope K5 records 360° video with four HD cameras and a thermal camera, according to its manufacturer.

  3. Drone alarm verification

On an alarm, a drone leaves its dock and streams images to the control room. Skydio Dock for X10 gets the drone airborne in 20 s, with a maximum range of 12 km, according to its manufacturer.

HOW DEPLOYMENT WORKS

From site survey to after-sales.

See all services
  1. Site survey

We walk the routes with you before any order: passage widths, door thresholds, floor gaps, slopes, lifts and doors, Wi-Fi coverage, charging and water points. The survey decides the model.

  2. Mapping and commissioning

The robot is mapped on site, routes and no-go zones are set, and lifts, doors or call systems are connected where the model supports it.

  3. Training

Operators learn daily use, charging and cleaning, error recovery and the emergency stop. One site lead learns to change routes and maps.

  4. After-sales

Remote diagnosis first, then a part or a technician. Preventive maintenance and software updates can be part of a service contract or of a RaaS fee.

ACQUISITION

REGULATION

What European law asks, in plain language.

Updated · General information, not legal advice.

Read the Machinery Regulation guide
CE marking and EU declaration of conformityEvery robot we deliver carries the CE marking and comes with the manufacturer's EU declaration of conformity, which we check before delivery.
Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230The Machinery Regulation applies from 20 January 2027 and replaces Directive 2006/42/EC. It adds requirements for autonomous mobile machinery, safety software and protection against corruption.
GDPR and robots with camerasA robot that films or maps a place where people can be identified processes personal data. The operator needs a legal basis, informs the people concerned and limits how long images are kept.
Your risk assessmentAs an employer, you include the robot in the risk assessment of the workplace like any other work equipment. The manufacturer's instructions state the residual risks and the training required.
Images and personal dataA robot or drone that films people processes personal data: the GDPR applies, with notice to the public, a defined purpose and a limited retention period. The site controller carries out an impact assessment where one is required.

FAQ

Questions security managers ask us.

Does a security robot replace a guard?

No. The robot runs rounds and sends images and alerts; a guard, on site or at the monitoring centre, decides on the response. The robot cuts foot patrols over large areas and at night.

Does a patrol robot work outdoors, at night and in bad weather?

According to their manufacturers, Robotnik RB-WATCHER XL is rated IP55 and runs up to 10 h, Ascento Guard patrols up to 8 h in rain, snow and wind with thermal, RGB and infrared cameras, and DEEP Robotics X30 is rated IP67 and works in darkness.

Can a drone monitor a site automatically?

Yes, from a dock that houses and charges it, subject to authorisation. Flights beyond visual line of sight fall in the 'specific' category of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947. According to its manufacturer, DJI Dock 3 is rated IP56 and operates from -30 to 50 °C.

Does the robot connect to our video surveillance?

According to their manufacturers, Ascento Guard integrates with existing video management systems and Robotnik RB-WATCHER transmits over a 5G router. The site survey checks network coverage, the route and the charging station location.
