Goods-to-person robots: the shelf comes to the picker

The robots lift mobile shelves and bring them to the picking station. The picker stays at the station: picking, checking and packing.

IN BRIEF

Updated

  1. In goods-to-person, low robots slide under mobile shelves, lift them and bring them to the station where the picker takes the items of the order.

  2. The Geek+ P800R lifts shelves of up to 1,000 kg and travels at 2 m/s loaded according to its manufacturer.

  3. Robot Distribution sizes the fleet, lays out the zone and stations, connects the software to your WMS, trains the team and maintains it, to buy, rent or as RaaS.

WHY

Goods-to-person picking

In an e-commerce warehouse, a picker who goes to the shelves spends much of the time walking the aisles. When orders are small and numerous, that walking becomes the largest cost and the main source of fatigue.

Goods-to-person reverses the flow: robots bring the shelf to a fixed, ergonomic station and take it away once the pick is done. The most requested shelves are stored near the stations, and the zone gets denser because there are no aisles left for people.

HOW IT RUNS

How picking runs with the robots.

  1. The WMS releases orders

The fleet software receives the orders, selects the shelves holding the items and assigns them to available robots.

  2. The robot brings the shelf

It slides under the shelf, lifts it and brings it to the picking station following the map of the robot zone.

  3. The picker picks

The station screen shows the location and quantity; the picker picks, scans and puts the item in the order tote.

  4. The shelf goes back

The robot takes the shelf to a free location, close to the stations if the item moves fast, while another robot arrives.

BEFORE INSTALLING

What the site survey checks before installation.

  1. Order profile

Number of SKUs, lines per order and daily peaks: these set the number of robots and stations.

  2. Warehouse floor

Flatness, joints and slab condition across the robot zone, and laying of navigation markers if the robot uses them.

  3. Shelves and loads

Size and weight of loaded shelves, compared with the shelf size and payload the robot accepts.

  4. Integration and safety

Exchange with the WMS, Wi-Fi across the zone, charging, and a robot zone closed to pedestrians with controlled access.

FAQ

Logistics managers' questions about goods-to-person.

How heavy a shelf can a robot carry?

1,000 kg for the Geek+ P800R and the Quicktron M100, 1,200 kg for the Geek+ P1200R and 600 kg for the Hikrobot Q3-600D according to their manufacturers.

Do we need new shelves?

The robot drives under mobile shelves on legs sized to match it: up to 1,020 × 1,020 mm for the P800R, 1,250 × 1,250 to 1,600 × 1,600 mm for the P1200R according to its manufacturer. Fixed racking must be replaced in the robot zone.

How long does a robot run on one charge?

7.5 h for the Quicktron M100 and 8 h for the Hikrobot Q3-600D, which recharges in 1.5 h according to their manufacturers. The fleet is sized so robots charge in turn without stopping picking.

Does the system connect to our WMS?

Yes, the fleet software receives orders from the WMS and reports the picks back. The interface is defined during the study, before installation.
