Sports turf maintenance robots: a complete mowing and line-marking programme for natural-turf pitches

A robot mower cuts the pitch several times a week at a constant height, and a line-marking robot repaints the lines before each match. The groundsman runs the programme and keeps the agronomic work.

IN BRIEF

Updated

  1. Robotic sports turf maintenance combines a robot mower, which cuts natural turf at a constant height several times a week, and a line-marking robot, which repaints the lines before matches.

  2. The Husqvarna CEORA 546 EPOS maintains about 25,000 m² at sports-field quality, with a cutting height adjustable from 20 to 70 mm, according to its manufacturer.

  3. Robot Distribution sizes the mower and marker pair, builds the schedule around training and match days, trains the groundsman and maintains the robots, to buy, rent or as RaaS.

WHY

Robotic maintenance of natural-turf sports pitches

A natural-turf pitch plays better when the grass is cut often, always at the same height, and the lines are sharp on match day. Between evening training, weekend fixtures and the weather, the groundsman moves from mowing to marking, watering, overseeding and aeration, often alone across several pitches.

The robots take the two most repetitive tasks: mowing, in frequent passes that take only a few millimetres each time, and line marking, repainted in the same place by GNSS. This page covers the full weekly programme; each job on its own is covered on our pages Robotic line marking of sports fields and Large-area professional robotic mowing.

HOW IT RUNS

How the maintenance week runs with the robots.

  1. Mapping and templates

At commissioning we record the boundaries of each pitch and its surrounds for the robot mower, and the line templates for the marker. The TinyLineMarker Pro X offers more than 200 templates and works without a GNSS base station, according to its manufacturer.

  2. Weekly schedule

Mowing goes into free slots, at night or in the morning, outside training and matches, and marking the day before or the morning of the fixture, after the last cut. The schedule is changed when the fixture list changes.

  3. Frequent mowing at a constant height

The robot mows several times a week at the set height, in satellite-guided stripes. The Belrobotics Bigmow GPS-RTK BM-850 cuts 42 cm wide with two floating heads and recharges in 55 min, according to its manufacturer.

  4. Pre-match marking and follow-up

The marker repaints the lines of the saved pitch: the Turf Tank Two marks an 11-a-side football pitch in about 24 min, according to its manufacturer. The groundsman checks the result, cleans cutting decks and nozzles, and adjusts the programme.

BEFORE INSTALLING

What the site survey checks before commissioning.

  1. Pitches, surrounds and fixtures

The number of pitches, their surrounds and the training and match calendar set the number of robots: the Husqvarna CEORA 546 EPOS maintains about 25,000 m² at sports-field quality, according to its manufacturer.

  2. Satellite reception and network

Stands, floodlight masts and trees can block the signal: reception is checked on each pitch, along with the network. The Navimow Terranox CM240M1 combines network RTK and 360° vision, according to its manufacturer.

  3. Wet ground and drainage

Areas that hold water are noted and rules are set for postponing work after heavy rain. The Navimow Terranox CM240M1 is rated IP66 and the Husqvarna CEORA 546 EPOS IPX5, according to their manufacturers: the rating protects the machine, not waterlogged turf.

  4. Security and storage

Charging station position, fencing, public access outside matches and storage for the marker are agreed with the site manager. The Belrobotics Bigmow GPS-RTK BM-850 has two sonars plus collision and lift sensors, according to its manufacturer.

FAQ

Clubs' and local authorities' questions about robotic sports turf maintenance.

How often does the robot mow a football pitch?

Several times a week depending on season and growth, in the slots left free by training and matches. The Belrobotics Bigmow GPS-RTK BM-850 mows up to 30,000 m² a week depending on use and watering, according to its manufacturer.

What cutting height can the robot hold?

The groundsman sets the height for the sport and season; the robot returns to it on every pass. According to their manufacturers: 20 to 70 mm for the Husqvarna CEORA 546 EPOS, 0.75 to 4 in (about 19 to 102 mm) for the Navimow Terranox CM240M1.

Do the robots work on a wet pitch?

The Navimow Terranox CM240M1 is rated IP66 and the Husqvarna CEORA 546 EPOS IPX5, according to their manufacturers. The schedule still pauses mowing on waterlogged ground, which marks. For line marking, the FJD PaintMaster Pro operates from 5 to 45 °C, according to its manufacturer.

Can the robots be left alone at a stadium?

The robot mower works alone, with the pitch closed to the public, using its sensors: sonars, collision and lift sensors on the Bigmow GPS-RTK BM-850, cellular fleet connectivity on the CEORA 546 EPOS, according to their manufacturers. The marker is brought out and watched by a member of staff, then stored. These machines fall under the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, replaced by Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 from 20 January 2027.

Does one robot do both mowing and marking?

No: in our catalogue they are two machines scheduled on the same calendar. Each job is covered on our pages Robotic line marking of sports fields and Large-area professional robotic mowing.
